Are you fully leveraging ChatGPT, Bard, and other AI models in your job search? If your answer isn't a resounding yes, this article can show you several ways to not only streamline your search but also eliminate repetitive tasks common in job applications.
It's recommended to have a basic understanding of generative AI chats before diving into this article. If the names ChatGPT and Bard don't ring a bell, consider experimenting with them before returning. For those continuing, we assume you're somewhat familiar with these AIs, perhaps having interacted with them or even created your own versions like we did with CareerGPT (https://chat.openai.com/g/g-nnEx5UOnk-careergpt). With that in mind, let's explore how effectively using prompts can enhance your job search.
Finding Relevant Job Openings.
Prompt: What companies are hiring for a Senior Frontend Developer in Berlin?
The search will generate a concise list for individual exploration of each company. Interestingly, a cross-reference with LinkedIn revealed that 4 out of 9 companies listed weren't advertising on LinkedIn but had active job listings on their websites.
It's also worth noting that the search results may include recruitment agencies, which could be beneficial if you're open to working with such teams. Utilising ChatGPT-4 for this prompt is advantageous due to its access to more up-to-date information.
Tailoring your Resume
Prompt: Using the copied job description (INSERT JOB DESCRIPTION), what words and key points should I include on my resume to stand out?
In return a detailed summary of the description along with areas to focus on within your resume allowing you to tailor based on the requirement at hand. This is very useful if you are struggling to bridge applications to interviews or are looking at switching career paths and need support with how to best create a resume that will capture attention.
Researching a Company
Prompt: I am applying for COMPANY NAME as a JOB TITLE, please share with me 5 key points about the company that I can bring up within my interview.
I narrowed my research focus to five key areas, but feel free to expand your investigation as needed, using this as a foundation for further inquiry. Depending on the available information about the company, you may need to refine your prompt for more detailed insights.
In my case, I explored a German-based global delivery platform, and the main aspects brought forward were its funding sources, market presence, growth trends, innovative strategies, and team performance.
Pre-Screening Questions
Prompt: I am applying for INSERT COMPANY, the values that resonate with me the most are teamwork and curiosity. Write a short answer to the question ‘why do you want to work with us?’ using these values.
AI can be a useful tool for answering repetitive and mandatory questions in applicant tracking systems, though it's not always the recommended approach. In the example above, I matched my personal values with those of the company and crafted a response to a specific question in the application process.
You can use this AI-generated response as a foundation, but it's important to personalise it further with your unique experiences and insights. This will add authenticity to your answer and help you stand out. Additionally, keep in mind that many applicant tracking systems are starting to incorporate AI detection. Therefore, directly copying and pasting an AI-generated response might not be advisable. Instead, use it as a guide to express your genuine interest and alignment with the company’s values.
Interview Support
Prompt: I have a pair programming interview on-site with a SaaS company. What advice would you recommend for such stage in the hiring process?
The advice provided can be tailored to different stages and industries, offering a range of tips to consider. This guidance aligns with what a proficient recruiter would typically advise, but it's particularly useful if you're navigating the process without a recruiter's assistance. It serves as a valuable reminder of the key points to anticipate and prepare for.
Networking
Prompt: Write me a short message I can share to the INSERT TITLE at INSERT COMPANY who has just advertised a INSERT ROLE opening expressing my interest.
This approach can be further personalised if you have access to the job description. In my example, I only used the company name and the individual's title. The answer shared a detailed message that incorporated one or two specific editable elements that resonate with the job opening to tailor your message accordingly.
While using prompts can be beneficial for networking, especially if you're new to it, I've found that authenticity and a personal touch yield better responses and stronger connections. Utilising AI as a starting point for networking is effective, but it's important to remember that it's not a substitute for genuine, long-term relationship building.
The advancements in generative AI over the past year have been remarkable. Amidst the growing discussion about its role in the job search process, I believe there's a straightforward perspective to consider. If talent teams are leveraging AI, then it's only fair for job seekers to do the same.
Think of AI as a tool to assist in your job search, not as a one-stop solution. It can significantly expedite your application process, but it's crucial to infuse each application with your unique personality. This personal touch ensures that your applications stand out and are tailored to each specific job opening.
